In the summer, there’s nothing better than firing up the grill and preparing a juicy steak or chicken breast. Tossing peppers and onions in olive oil to brown them along with the meat makes for the perfect barbecue treat. When you have an outdoor charcoal grill , one of the best aspects of a grill in general is the ability to smoke a meal until it’s tender and juicy.

Some grills are better than others and preferences are everywhere when it comes to grill masters.

However, there is one particular outdoor charcoal grill that seems to be the most watched among grilling connoisseurs: the Weber Smokey Joe.

When it comes to performance, the Weber Smokey Joe Grill outperforms them all. The charcoal used to cook your food ensures even cooking and gets your meat ready for you quickly.

Even winter use is an option as this outdoor charcoal grill is small and simple enough to use in a garage during cold weather.

By replacing the charcoal from time to time, you ensure that what you cook is always fresh, juicy and tender, no matter what.

The Weber Smokey Joe Grill is by far one of the best outdoor charcoal grills in the cooking industry and commercial and comes highly recommended by all users. I have several grills at home. A few weeks ago I realized I needed something different. It had to be a grill that was easy to carry from one place to another. That prompted me to do some research and product testing. One of the portable grills I tried was the Weber Smokey Joe. If you are considering buying it, this post will give you an idea of what to expect from it.

Outside

The Smokey Joe has a diameter of 37 cm in the cooking area. The first thing that will catch your attention is the glossy finish that it has. It has a polished look.

The handle and stand are great additions. They not only play an integral role. They also add to the aesthetics. Don’t just judge the space, make up for looking at it. It can go either way. It’s easy to think it can take in more food than it can. Or do you think it’s too small. We analyze your room and what fits into it.

Portability

As mentioned above, we wanted a grill that was easy to transport. The Weber Smokey Joe has a flip top. It will enable you to take it from one place to another. This lid has a comfortable handle that is heat resistant. This means YOU can not only move the grill to the perfect spot, but also move it from one spot to another while the meat is cooking. We advise caution with the latter.

The Smokey Joe weighs less than 10 pounds. It has dimensions of 15.37 x 8.75 x 15.12 inches.

What’s in The Box?

  • Assembly instructions
  • Grill instruction manual
  • Ash catcher
  • Legs
  • Bolts and nuts package
  • Handle
  • Two grates
  • Lid
  • Base

You will need to use a flat and Phillips screwdriver to put everything together. The included instructions are easy to understand. The only limitation would be the handle. Screw is not too tight.

Cooking Area Space

Portability also means there is less space on the grill. Luckily, up to 5 burgers pass onto the cooking space. That’s enough room for two or three steaks.

Construction/Build/Durability and Heat Retention

The grill body is made of porcelain enamel. Next, you’re done with an anti-corrosion coating. This makes it more suitable for various weather conditions and general outdoor use.

Heat storage and control is just as easy. There are aluminum shock absorbers for that. When YOU activate THEM, free air movement is enabled, which acts as a thermal control mechanism. It gives off the heat that will have accumulated inside the grill. You can use the dampeners when the cable is closed. Minimizes the amount of air entering the grill and reduces the likelihood of a puff of air igniting the flames.

Fuel Type

You can use wood or charcoal pellets in the Smokey Joe. Your choice depends on what you are using the grill for. If you prefer your meat to fuel, wood pellets are the way to go. Charcoal tends to burn longer.

Advantages

  • It’s easy to carry.
  • Not much configuration is required.
  • Thermal control mechanisms are in place.
  • It doesn’t take much to clean it.
  • There is a heat resistant handle on the lid.

Disadvantages

  • The handle can become brittle if screwed in too far.

How to Use it

The first step in using this grill is setting it up. It comes with detachable legs that pass underneath. The legs provide stability. This is a critical feature when it comes to heat. There is an ash catcher platform under the legs. It does an excellent job of collecting ash that accumulates during cooking. The milder the cleaning slightly.

Once the legs are in place you can add your fuel to the grill. My preference would be to have no more than half the container. This will give you some wiggle room later. You can add more fuel if needed. Getting rid of excess fuel is an unnecessary and risky task.

Turn on the heat and let it sit before placing it on the coated steel cooking grate. I would recommend placing the grill over the heat for a few minutes before you start cooking. This gives the heat enough time to eliminate any remaining dirt or bacteria.

Allow the fuel to warm up. Make sure there isn’t too much flame before you start cooking. Use lead to conserve heat if needed. It also does an excellent job of controlling the flame. Closing the grill deprives it of the air containing the fire.

Speaking of temperature control. Don’t forget to use your buffers. They are made for this purpose only. All you have to do is line up the vents and allow air to flow freely in and out of the grill. Opening the dampers lets some cool air in if you think it’s gotten too hot.

How to Clean

Grill cleaning can be done in parts. Here are some things YOU will need:

  • Bowl of water with soapy water.
  • Scorer
  • Wire brush

Use the water to scrub the outside of the grill. You must remove all debris. You can do this with the scourer or simply with a cleaning cloth. What you use depends on the dirt you are dealing with. If you use the scouring pad, be careful as it can scratch the paintwork.

The cooking grate is the most difficult part to clean. We have reserved the wire brush for this. You don’t always have to use the wire brush. Sometimes the scouring pad and some soap are enough. Enter the brush for stubborn burns and hard-to-remove stains.

It is always advisable to soak the grillage for at least half an hour before cleaning it. This will soften the burns and make your life a lot easier.

Conclusion

Statistically based on our grilling experience and everything WILL be covered in this post, we would recommend the Weber Smokey Joe Grill. If I had to give a number I would say it is best suited for a group of 4 people maximum. Two people could use. The anti-rust coating was the deciding factor for me. This means that durability is built into the grill.
